It was brilliant to see so many schools around the UK bring so much energy to the day. The enthusiasm for World Ocean Day and feedback from thousands of schools & teachers has demonstrated to us how much children love learning about our ocean, its inhabitants, and what they can do to protect them. There’s a lot of love for the big blue out there 💙
We would love to hear back from you on how the day went; what you enjoyed teaching, subjects that pupils connected to, what could be improved on for future World Ocean Days.
We’ve also put together this list of resources that all schools around the UK can get involved with to continue their ocean connection and keep pupils engaged in thinking about their impact on the ocean. It includes free fishing trips, beach cleans and a boat load of swimming!
Become a plastic free school
This groundbreaking programme created by Surfers Against Sewage equips and empowers young activists with the tools to create positive, lasting environmental change in their schools.

Host a zero plastic school lunch
Getting children engaged in thinking about exactly how much plastic they use on a daily basis is a great way to make lasting impact and change. Zero plastic lunches are a great challenge for both teachers and students to come together and establish a new normal!
The Big School Swim
The Big School Swim is an annual event that celebrates swimming in schools. It is a great opportunity for you and your pupils to celebrate the fun – and importance – of learning how to swim and learning about water safety.

Registering for the School Swimming and Water Safety Charter gives you access to extensive resources.These can help and support you to develop a great school swimming experience for the pupils you teach, not just in the pool, but in the classroom too.
Free fishing lessons
Let’s Fish! is an initiative run by the Canal & River Trust aiming to get people in to fishing. Fishing is a great way to be active outdoors and connect to nature and the environment. It’s also an ideal way to study the species that live within our waterways and learn what the Canal & River Trust is doing to look after them.

We hope that in the near future everyone will consider themselves an Ocean Advocate. Here are some cards which you can print out for classrooms which will remind your pupils how to deepen their connection to water and lessen their impact on the ocean.
