World Ocean Day for Schools Logo

Friday 11th June

How can we help more people experience the wellbeing benefits of blue spaces ?

hosted by our friends at Marine Conservation Society

Assembly at 9am

Lizzie Daly, TV wildlife presenter and Jenny Griffiths from the Marine Conservation Society will start the day with a live assembly.

Once Lizzie has introduced the day’s challenge Jenny will talk about the wellbeing benefits of the ocean. We’ll do a mindfulness activity together that helps us reflect on our own experience of blue spaces.

MCS will help us all connect to the ocean, no matter where we live. Then we’ll explore our feelings associated with water. This session will help us feel grateful for the sea and help us understand how it contributes to our lives and all the amazing impacts it has on our wellbeing.

Big wave surfer, marine social scientist, explorer and author, Easkey Britton will take us on a mindfulness journey as she teaches us techniques to connect to our ‘blue minds’.

And the team at Swim Dem Crew will share their story of connecting more people in urban spaces to water. Beyond the Blue is a documentary that explores the origins of inner city swim club and what it means to build community through swimming.

Have you downloaded your guide to creating a Blue Space yet ? That’s a great place to start !

Get ready to feel super relaxed this afternoon ! After a week of designing, building and creating your Blue Space it’s time to enjoy it!

Join Easkey for another amazing session where she’ll teach you the ‘ocean breath’ and then we join Lizzie Larbalestier who is going to show you how to awaken your blue senses.

Join Nat Fox for a Blue Yoga session to relax your body and mind, then Sara Campbell will show us how to connect to our inner dolphin and learn how big wave surfers, freedivers and underwater photographers have learned the art of breathing to help them do what they do in the ocean.

We’ve got two stories for you – Author Natalie Newman will read you her fantastic book about a friendly shark called Lark. Our second story session with Laura from Fabled – but this one is a little different – Laura will be teaching you how to create your own ocean stories. We can’t wait to hear them!

And finally we have a drawing and writing activity from UK Youth for Nature to help us explore what blue spaces mean to us.
